The Chicago Cubs announced on Thursday that they would not be re-signing closer Kerry Wood after he has spend the last ten seasons with the team. General manager Jim Hendry said that Wood deserves the three or four year contract that he is asking for but right now the Cubs just can’t give that to him.

To fill Wood’s role, the Cubs traded for Kevin Gregg on Thursday as well. The Cubs will be sending Jose Ceda to the Florida Marlins in exchange for Gregg. Gregg wasn’t that great last year in the closers role so I hope he a setup mane for Carlos Marmol. Marmol needs to be the closer of this team in my opinion.

What do you think Cubs fans?

The news from the Chicago Tribune on Tuesday morning is that the Chicago Cubs have offered starting pitcher Ryan Dempster a four year contract worth $50 million. Dempster can probably get more around the $60-$65 million for four years if he chooses to go out and test the free agent market. Will he stay with the Cubs for the $12-$13 million per year? We should know soon I would expect.

The Cubs rumors are still going around about Jake Peavy. However at this time it looks as if the Cubs will need a third team to get involved if they want to land Peavy. The Padres aren’t excited about the young arms that the Cubs are trying to send to the Padres. Peavy will either land with the Braves or Cubs and we should know before Thanksgiving.

The Chicago Cubs capitalized on a error by the San Diego Padres as they opened up the flood gates and put up 12 runs on the board as they beat the Padres 12-3. Great win for the Cubs as they are off to a 4-0 start on their current homestand and have moved a game up in the division on the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Cubs put up six runs in the fifth inning, and then another five runs in the sixth inning as they pretty much put the nail in the coffin for the Padres. Alfonso Soriano had a two run home run, Geovany Soto and Mark DeRosa also both had two rbi in the game. Derrek Lee, Aramis Ramirez, Kosuke Fukudome, and Reed Johnson all had one rbi in the game.

Carlos Zambrano picked up his sixth win of the season as he improved his record to 6-1 with the win. Zambrano tossed seven innings and gave up six hits and three runs. Zambrano’s pitch count was down, but with that big of lead Lou Piniella decided to take him out after seven innings.

Scott Eyre and Bob Howry closed out the game after Zambrano excited.

The Cubs are playing good ball once again, and they will try to keep it up tomorrow when they play another night game against the Padres. Cubs Blog

The Chicago Cubs lost to the Colorado Rockies 4-2 on Thursday afternoon and their six game winning streak is over. The Cubs had tied the game up in the eigth inning, but then allowed two runs in the bottom of the inning. The cubs were almost out of the inning but Ronny Cedeno and Ryan Theriot were unable to turn an inning ending double play.

Kevin Hart took the loss for the Cubs as he pitched the eigth inning. Starting pitcher Jason Marquis pitched ok as he went seven innings and allowed eight hits but only one run. Marquis should have seen a better result then a no-decision but sometimes that is just how it goes.

Felix Pie and Mike Fontenot both had one RBI each at the plate. Pie went 2-3 and had half the Cubs hits who could only mange four hits the entire game.

Now the Cubs will fly to Washington D.C. to start a weekend series with the Washington Nationals.

The Chicago Cubs finished up a three game sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates with a 7-3 win on Thursday night. The Cubs were able to get the win even though Rich Hill only lasted three innings as he was moved up a day in the rotation as Jason Marquis continues to battle the flu.

Jon Leiber picked up his second win of the season as he filled in for Hill and pitched 4.1 innings. He did allow five hits, but did not allow a run. Following Leiber, Bob Howry and Kerry Wood finished out the game.

Geovany Soto led the Cubs at the plate as he went 4-5 and two RBI. Soto was a triple shy of the cycle. Mike Fontenot also had a good game as he hit a two run home run. Derrek Lee also had two RBI’s even though he didn’t get a hit in the game. Reed Johnson chipped in with an RBI in the in the 6th inning as well.

Great win for the Cubs as they improve their record to 6-3 on the season.
