The Cubs were swept in a three-game series at Pittsburgh, falling to 13-16 overall and to 6-10 on the road.

What has manager Lou Piniella mystified is the difference in offense between home and road games.

The Cubs are batting .297 at home and .247 on the road. They’re averaging 5.7 runs per game at home but only 3.9 on the road.

“Teams usually play better at home,” Piniella said, “but the disparity in our offensive numbers, I don’t really have an answer for it. I know when the wind blows out at Wrigley, it’s an inviting park to hit in. We got to find a way to score more than two runs on the road. We’ve been doing that consistently too many times. It’s just hard to win on the road with just two runs.”
