Did Mike Quade learn anything this season? Judging by the regular-season finale, I’m pretty sure he didn’t. The Chicago Cubs end the season with a 9-2 loss to the San Diego Padres on Sept. 28, 2011. Both teams finished the season at 71-91.

Starlin Castro had two singles to extend his NL-leading total to 206 hits, Alfonso Soriano hit a go-ahead, three-run homer in the eighth inning and the Chicago Cubs beat the Padres 6-2 on Tuesday night in a matchup of 90-game losers.

Casey Coleman paid the price after hitting his first career triple. The Chicago Cubs’ starting pitcher ended Mat Latos’ bid for a no-hitter by tripling into the gap in right-center with one out in the sixth inning Monday night. All he really did, though, was get himself tired. He was stranded, and the Cubs went on to lose 2-0.
