The Cubs scored five unearned runs on just two hits in the first, then were blanked from there in the Cardinals’ 13-5 victory on Saturday. St. Louis scored eight runs in the fifth inning, including five after Holliday broke up a potential inning-ending double play.

Chicago right-hander Matt Garza is glad July is finally coming to a close. He ended a respectable month with a six-run outing against the Cardinals in the Chicago Cubs’ 9-2 loss on Friday night. Garza finished the month 0-2 with four no-decisions and a 3.82 ERA in six starts. “I’ll just keep going, there’s no other way to do it,” he said.

Ryan Dempster has had some of his best success against Milwaukee before one bad pitch put the Cubs in a modest hole. Chicago never recovered. Dempster threw six solid innings after allowing three early runs and the Cubs failed to score in a bases loaded opportunity with no outs in the sixth in the Brewers 3-2 win over Chicago on Tuesday night.
