Cubs pitcher Carlos Zambrano left Thursday’s start against San Francisco in the second inning because of soreness in his lower back. Zambrano had just thrown a ball to Eli Whiteside after an RBI single by Miguel Tejada when he began stretching his back. Trainer Mark O’Neal and pitching coach Mark Riggins rushed out and manager Mike Quade followed.

On June 28, the San Francisco Giants played against the Chicago Cubs in a doubleheader. Both games were full of some noteworthy events. First of all, Ryan Vogelsong finally showed some humanity by allowing a few runs, but the offense exploded for 13 runs to give him the win anyway.

Quade will take the spot of Jim Riggleman, who resigned last week as manager of the Washington Nationals. The 54-year-old Quade is in his first full season as the Cubs' manager. Chicago has been beset by injuries this season, a factor in its disappointing start.
