The popularity of Major League Baseball as a whole has come and gone quite a bit in the last couple of decades. The strike from the mid 1990s really hurt the popularity of the sport. Just a few short years ago, the steroid era hurt the popularity of the game badly. The league has been able to quietly grow more popular with the fan base around the world over the last few years. With less than a week remaining until their regular season opener, the Chicago Cubs have finalized their pitching rotation. As expected, Randy Wells will solidify the fourth spot in the rotation. 24-year old Andrew Cashner outperformed Carlos Silva and a plethora of other candidates for the Cubs final starting pitching position. Cashner's promotion could come as a mild surprise to some. Heading into Saturday's exhibition contest against the Texas Rangers, Cashner had outperformed Silva, who had a miserable spring.

Carlos Silva was released by the Chicago Cubs on Sunday, one day after they told the veteran pitcher he would not make the opening-day roster. The move leaves the Cubs on the hook for Silva's $11.5 million salary this season. The 31-year-old right-hander made it clear Saturday he would not accept a minor league assignment.

I come here not to praise Carlos Silva but instead to bury the Chicago Cubs for how it appears they handled telling him that he was no longer welcome on the team. I'm not taking Silva's side — heavens, no … Continue reading →
